Getting a US Dot number

If you read our last blog post regarding wether or not you need a USDOT number, registration is your next step. Registering for your unique DOT number can be confusing. Hopefully this step by step helps you through it! 

1. Determine your registration requirements with FMCSA-

Answer these questions to assist you with part one: Do you transport hazardous material? Do you operate a commercial vehicle for interstate travel that hauls goods or people? Do you know your vehicles Gross Vehicle Weight? Does your vehicle transport 8 or more passengers (including driver)? Do you get compensated for transporting passengers? Does your vehicle transport more than 15 people but you do not get paid to transport them? 

Answer these questions to assist you with part two: Are you involved in interstate commerce for trade, transporting or traffic within the US? Do you travel from one state to another? Do you travel between two places within a state? Or do you pass through a different state while transport?

2. Do you operate out of a state that requires commercial vehicles traveling within that state (Intrastate) to register for a US DOT number?  Listed below:

3. If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, it is likely you will need to go ahead and begin US DOT registration. The registration application can be found on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website here
