USDOT Decal Maintenance Checklist | Magnetic & Vinyl Sign Care Tips

The Ultimate Maintenance Checklist for USDOT Decals & Magnets

Extend the life of your signs—and your compliance.

Whether you’re running a single truck or a full fleet, your USDOT decals are one of the most visible (and legally required) parts of your vehicle. But harsh weather, road grime, and everyday wear can take their toll—especially on poorly maintained decals.

Here’s a simple maintenance checklist to keep your signs clean, legible, and working hard for you all year long.

✅ Weekly Maintenance

  • Inspect for damage or peeling
Look for lifting edges on vinyl and weakened magnet hold after rain or washes.
  • Wipe clean
Use a damp microfiber cloth to gently remove dust, salt, or bug debris.
  • Test adhesion
Ensure magnets are still gripping securely and vinyl is flush with no air pockets.

🧽 Monthly Deep Clean

  • Remove magnets before washing
Never pressure-wash over magnetic signs. Remove, clean separately, and let dry completely before reapplying.
  • Clean the contact surface
Use mild soap and water to clean both the truck door and the back of the magnet.
  • Check visibility
Fading letters? Grimy background? Replace signs that are in less than great shape.

🛠 Seasonal Care

Spring / Summer

  • Inspect vinyl for heat warping or bubbling.
  • Wash magnets more frequently in bug-heavy areas.
  • Store spare signs flat in a shaded space to avoid warping. Never store them in the vehicle.

Fall / Winter

  • Remove magnets overnight during freezing temps.
  • Keep vinyl signs dry to prevent edge peeling from ice and snow.
  • Use a plastic squeegee to reapply if bubbles form.

🧲 Magnet-Specific Tips

  • Don’t leave magnets on for more than a few days at a time without removal and cleaning.
  • Avoid placing magnets over ridges, seams, or rust.
  • Store flat, indoors—not inside the truck.

🏷 When to Replace Your USDOT Sign

Signs should be replaced if:

  • Text is no longer visible from 50 feet (per FMCSA guidelines)
  • Letters are peeling, cracked, or faded
  • You’ve changed companies, phone numbers, or authority types

🔄 Keep It Compliant & Professional

Well-maintained USDOT decals do more than meet federal requirements—they show your business cares about the details.
